Factors Influencing Depression in the community Elderly

Abstract

|
Purpose: The study was done to identify factors influencing depression in elders. Methods: Data were collected by questionnaires from 191 elders in D metropolitan city. Measures were depression, perceived health status, self esteem and leisure activities. Data were analyzed using frequencies, means and standard deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and hierarchial multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 17.0 version. Results: There were significant differences in depression according to, gender, education level, partner, children status. depression correlated negatively with perceived health status, self esteem and leisure activities. According to the research, factors influencing depression in elders were self-esteem, perceived health status, leisure activity, child status. These factors explained 47.6% of the total variance. Conclusion: The negatively correlation between depression and self-esteem, perceived health
status, leisure activity, child status identified in this study can have an impact on strategies to improve the depression of elders. Therefore, the results can be used as a reference for future studies.
